Choosing The Right Recessed Lighting
During the planning process, we have run into confusion regarding ceiling fixtures vs. recessed lighting. Think of the lighting fixture (a chandelier or hanging farm lamp) as the beacon of beauty and the recessed light fixtures (installed directly into an opening in the ceiling) as the beacon of light. We love incorporating both into your remodeling or new construction - art and controlled lighting.
While the recessed lighting is installed into the ceiling, it is almost flush with the ceiling and light shines directly downward (or angled if you have movable light fixtures). This can make a room appear larger and is great in areas with lower ceilings. Folks also choose to use them in their hallways and bathrooms. The great thing about recess lights is they can be paired with any light fixture.
Things To Consider When Choosing Recessed Lighting
New Construction vs. Remodeling
Is your recessed lighting part of new construction or a remodeling project? The lighting fixtures you will be able to choose from will vary depending on the purpose and measurements. New construction recessed lights are mounted to ceiling joists by arms vs. a recessed lighting system for remodelling have clips which go directly into the ceiling drywall.
Shapes & Colors
Recessed lights come in two shapes: round and square. There is no difference in terms performance between these two, so choosing the shape of your fixture will be based primarily on your design preference.
The metal pieces of recessed light fixtures now come in a wide range colors, including metallic hues and even black.
Outdoor/Indoor/Water
Outdoor recessed lights that are rated for damp locations are suitable for covered outdoor areas like porches and screen rooms -there is exposure to condensation but no direct contact with water. Wet rated outdoor recessed lights are safe come in direct contact with water, such as rain, shower water spray, sleet, or snow.
Function & Light
Most recessed lights come with a stationary bulb, but there are some fixtures with movable bulbs that allow you to direct illumination where you need it.
The type of voltage that will power the lights may require a transformer and special dimmer.
Some recessed lighting fixtures will require standard bulbs while others may use bulbs with flatter, wider surfaces. Moving into 2021, we are now installing a lot of LED bulbs compared to the halogen.
