How To Choose The Right Counter Top
There are many options for your kitchen and bathroom countertop surface. Choosing the right one can feel a little overwhelming and we’re happy to share the pros and cons of the most popular trends with you. Choosing the ideal countertop depends on your priorities – we’ll explain the key characteristics of each type to help you make the right choice.
Granite
If you love the unique design of natural beauty but are prepared for occasional maintenance to protect your investment - granite may be right for you! Appearance varies from slab-to-slab, visually moving vibrant colors in either a high gloss or leathered finish. The porous surface requires maintenance (sealant) every 10-15 years to protect against staining and oil penetration.
Quartz
If you want a high-class look without the maintenance - quartz is on the pricier side but a great investment. If you have a high traffic kitchen or bath and want a surface that is less susceptible to staining and marking - quartz is one of the most durable countertop surfaces available. The finish is almost always glossy and only requires special attention on the lighter color slabs.
Marble
Marble is the most classic, luxury countertop and best in lower traffic, less abrasive kitchens and baths. Marble's porous surface requires regular maintenance and is one of the most susceptible surfaces to staining and abrasion. Patterns and colors vary from slab-to-slab and the cost is high to extremely high depending on species and pattern.
Wood
If you like the warmth and character of wood and want to add a furniture-like focal point this is a great way to add that natural vibe. As wood is great as a focal point or dedicated food prep/chopping station - it is not recommended as the main surface throughout a kitchen because it requires regular maintenance, scratches easily, and is susceptible to damage by water, steam and other household items. However, wood can easily be repaired with a light sanding and an application of oil.
Laminate
If you’re designing on a budget or plan to purchase your “dream” countertop in the near future, but still want a chic look plus durability, laminate is the affordable choice. Laminate is resistant to abrasion and very easy to maintain. Colors and patterns are limitless and limitless with a wide range of matte and high gloss.
